VOICES SCHOLARSHIP

WHAT IS THE VOICES SCHOLARSHIP?

VOICES has established a scholarship for students who have participated in the Odyssey of the Mind program for one or more years. (A student need not be involved with Odyssey of the Mind during the current school year.) As Odyssey of the Mind seeks to develop skills in creative problem-solving, teamwork, perseverance, and good sportsmanship, the recipient of this scholarship will be a current high school senior or college undergraduate who demonstrates these qualities. A VOICES scholarship in the amount of $500.00 will be awarded to a Virginia student who will be attending any university, college, community college, or specialized school a minimum of 9 semester hours in the fall following the year of award.

This scholarship will be awarded for four consecutive years to one student as long as the student is enrolled as a full time student. Any current graduating high school senior or undergraduate college student may apply.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE VOICES SCHOLARSHIP?

In order to be considered, your application must be completed in full and received no later than two weeks prior to the VOICES state tournament.

Your application must include:

  • The Scholarship Application Form
  • One letter of recommendation. Your letter can be written by your Odyssey of the Mind coach; high school administrator, counselor, or teacher. It should not be written by a parent. The letter of recommendation should be no longer than a page, and should address your problem-solving capabilities, teamwork, perseverance, creativity, and sportsmanship. Therefore, you are encouraged to choose a person who is familiar with those qualities in you. Ask the person completing your letter to place his/her letter in an envelope and seal it before returning it to you.
  • A response to both (a) and (b). Your response may take any form, format, or style you wish.
    1. How has Odyssey of the Mind contributed to making you the person you are today?
    2. Design a problem that could be used in spontaneous competition. It may be verbal, verbal hands-on, or hands-on. Include charts or pictures and scoring information as appropriate. Then indicate one or more solutions to the problem that could be considered “creative.”

WAYNE R. KEHRLI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

WHAT IS THE WAYNE R. KEHRLI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP?

Wayne R. Kehrli was involved with Odyssey of the Mind for 35 years. During that time, he volunteered in many aspects of Odyssey of the Mind; serving as a coach, judge, and ultimately as the International Problem Captain for Problem #1, a position he held for 25 years until his retirement in 2014 due to illness. He was honored with the Odyssey of the Mind Spirit Award in 2007. Wayne loved creative thought and beyond-the-box thinking. He believed creativity was everywhere; in every Odyssey of the Mind problem, every vocation, and everyday life. He loved watching kids grow and change through their Odyssey experience.

The Kehrli family honors Wayne by continuing what he dedicated much of his life to – encouraging creativity, education, and creativity in education. This $1,111 scholarship will be awarded to a Division IV applicant who displays the passion, creativity and growth Wayne so greatly encouraged and admired. His creative and kind spirit will live on through the Wayne R. Kehrli Memorial Scholarship.

COU HOUSING GRANTS

WHAT IS A COU HOUSING GRANT?

COU Housing Grants are designed to assist teams in experiencing the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. A COU grant is intended to supplement efforts of teams to raise sufficient funds to attend World Finals. Funds are extremely limited, and only a small portion of applicants are awarded grants each year, but we do our best to ensure that teams who have qualified to compete at World Finals get to have the opportunity to do so. COU Housing Grants provide World Finals room and board packages purchased through Creative Competitions, Inc. Only teams electing to stay in official campus housing are eligible. Successful teams will be awarded a variable number of packages depending on need. These awards carry no cash equivalent and are awarded to teams, not individuals.
